Accentuations of the Third Volition

As a conscious function, the Third Volition constantly keeps the process of setting and achieving goals in its attention. The holder of the Third Volition thinks and speaks about what they want, how they plan to achieve it, reflects on whether it’s worth wanting it or not, and reacts vividly to the support of other people in these matters and appreciates it. As an introverted function, the Third Volition is directed towards realizing its own ambitions, sometimes not noticing that other people also have their own desires. At the same time, the Third Volition is an objective function, and is therefore susceptible to external influences, including unwanted ones. The Third Volition places great importance on public opinion, can do a lot for show, or, conversely, avoid publicity to avoid negative reactions.

Like other functions, in the Third Volition, one of the properties is usually manifested more strongly than the other two, and this has a decisive influence on the person’s character. We will examine how accentuated properties are manifested below:

Accentuation: consciousness

This Third Volition is the most harmonious of all, as it is the closest in manifestations to the Second Volition. Such a person is interested in doing a common cause, appreciates support, and can provide it themselves, unhealthy self-assertion is not characteristic of them. They love to discuss their desires, actions, and plans for the future and perceive the achievement of goals as a creative process. Working in a team, the holder of this accentuation can achieve a lot. However, unlike the Second Volition, this Third Volition is primarily occupied with its own aspirations and interaction with other people helps it achieve them. In addition, the Third Volition may have self-doubt and a lack of motivation, so it needs external influence to stay on track, while the Second Volition can motivate itself.

Accentuation: introversion

A person with an accentuated introversion of 3V appears to be the most ambitious of all. They strive for self-assertion and seek to prove their worth to others. Their goals are often very global, and they do not shy away from attention but instead want to draw attention to themselves and their activities. The holder of this accentuation is usually a very bright person who leaves no one indifferent. The Third Volition of this type can be mistaken for a First Volition because of their apparent self-confidence and successful self-realization. However, there are some differences between them. Firstly, 3V is much more inclined to confront public opinion, engage in some kind of struggle, and even make it their life’s work. 1V, on the other hand, does not believe that external factors limit their freedom or the freedom of others, so they simply do what they consider necessary without trying to prove anything to anyone. 3V may blame circumstances and other people for their failures or society’s problems, whereas this is not typical of 1V.

Accentuation: objectivity

A 3V with accentuated objectivity is strongly afraid of judgmental looks and words, and their insecurity exceeds the desire for self-assertion. The holder of this accentuation is usually a hidden person, unremarkable, but secretly despising those around them. They have difficulty accepting support because they do not trust people and do not feel worthy of it. A person with an accentuated low 3V is more likely than others to consider themselves insignificant, pathetic, and incapable of anything, and these thoughts oppress them and make them helpless. They may appear placid and go with the flow, like 4V, but they do not have the same easy attitude towards themselves and acceptance of other people. For such a person, it is usually comfortable to work in some kind of hierarchical structure where there are authorities to whom they can obey and lower ranks through which they can assert themselves. As this type of 3V does not realize their ambitions in the “big world,” they are inclined to take it out on their close circle of people who depend on them. In summary, it can be said that this is the most closed-off variant of 3V.
